Military Order of the Purple Heart
George A. Rauh
Chapter 2201
Huntsville, Al.

SERGEANT MAJOR BILLY RAY LANEY, a member of the 5th Special Forces Group arrived in Vietnam May 1967.
One month later on 3 June he was listed as Missing in Action (MIA) near the Laotian border.
The Defense Department, 11 years later in 1978, declared him deceased. His family knew he was missing for 33 years.
A few months ago the remains of Laney, three US Marines, and several South Vietnamese soldiers were discovered in a mass grave.
Those remains were transported to the forensic laboratory in Hawaii  where SGM Laney was positively identified as being a member of that group.
To the best of our knowledge there are only two other soldiers from Alabama still unaccounted for
and listed as MIA’s from the Vietnam War.
They are Prentice Wayne Hicks from Huntsville and Edward Upner from Daleville.
